Take a look at Journey Three!!

At long last!!!!!  I am ready to show you the quilts for Journey Three!!  It feels soooo good!!  (Pardon my over use of exclamation points, but I really needed to do it.  Teehee!!)

There are two big changes to Journey Three and I hope you like them.

First, we are changing our hand sewing project from Yo-yos, which I still adore, to hexagons, which I absolutely love!!  I wanted to keep things fresh and fun, and boy are those hexagons fun!!  To buy a Hexagon Starter kit, including a finished sample hexagon, click here.

Secondly, I am adding alternate sizes for all of the quilts.  In my own Prairie Women's group, we talk about how some of us (me included) love small blocks....but not everyone does!  I don't want anyone to feel left out, so I decided to offer alternate sizes, giving options.  In this way, I hope there's something for everyone.

Quilt One ~ Contrary Wife

We start our Journey with this quilt called Contrary Wife.  This is a replica of an antique quilt that I own.  I've always loved the reel block and thoroughly enjoyed every moment making this quilt.  There are three alternate patterns for the Contrary Wife (two with no applique)!  This is the only lap/throw size quilt in the series.   The quilting on this quilt is stunning.  I can say that 'cause I didn't quilt it!

Quilt Two ~ Windy Hill Farm

I never get tired of the classic double pink and indigo blue fabrics!  This is an easy quilt to make featuring our most traditional blocks - the Nine Patch and Pinwheel. I love the motion the
Pinwheels give the quilt without over taking it.  I had a great time choosing the fabrics for it, too.
And when I did....I cut a kit one for one lucky quilter to win!!

As promised, it's time for our Journey Three kit contests to begin!!!  Yay!!

To enter, leave me a comment about your favorite blocks, and/or your least favorite block, and why.  It is very helpful if you include your email address in your comment.  Be sure to comment by midnight, Saturday, Oct 29th.  I'll choose a winner for the Windy Hill Farm kit (which includes the Windy Hill Farm pattern) on Sunday.

There will be three more kits coming, so visit often!

Good Luck!!  Pam

P.S.  Lynne Hagmeier and I have received news that our quilting cruise to Alaska is beginning to fill nicely!  We'd love for you to join us on The Great Girlfriend Get-Away!!  Don't forget to check out our cruise brochure.....click here!

  1. I love log cabin blocks and all of the variations. You can make so many designs from this one block. And anything with a star is also a favorite of mine.

  2. Since I am originally from Ohio, I have to say Ohio Star, but I have to agree with Debra, I love log cabins best. It was the first quilt block that I learned to make many years ago.

  3. I'm a bit of a log cabin nut but I've just taken up applique and Contrary Wife looks like a perfect next project for me. But I don't understand whether your Prairie Women's Sewing Club is an in-store class, a book or set of patterns, or what. Can you clarify?

  4. I enjoy log cabins, especially with narrow logs. I'm pretty traditional, so stars and nine patches, especially set on point, call to me. Contrary Wife is beautiful.
I know you suggested putting the email address in the comment, but that makes it visible to the world...don't feel too good about that. So I hope this is OK.

  5. Your Contrary Wife is beautiful! My favorite block is the good ol' nine patch. There is just so much you can do with it.

  6. I have always loved stars of any kind. Of course a great 9-patch or 4-patch thrown in never hurt! So much love..not enough time!

  7. Can't wait for Journey three! I love Twisted Star blocks and can't think of any I don't like. I love aopplique the most, but am looking forward to the hexagon challenge.

  8. These are both really nice quilts & I liked your pattern in the new Sew Scrappy, too :)

  9. Oh I love stars and pinwheels. Both are just so fun. I'm not a fan of curved piecing, but it's really not so bad.

  10. I love the churn dash block...so much you can do with it. I also love the good old nine patch. I'm looking forward to Journey 3.

  11. My favorite block is always the one I am working on right now! Fickle I guess! Or just nutty over quilting! Must make Contrary Wife, gotta have that pattern!

  12. Oh Pam -- they are both wonderful! I can see why you are so excited about them! And I love the fact that alternate sizes will be offered! I've begun making hexagons from your kit and instructions and LOVE them! What a fun way to pass the time in front of the TV! My favorite block is the churn dash -- it just reminds me of an era gone by and life in middle America! I don't even think I have a least favorite!
    Cheers!

  13. Great quilts! I like log cabins and Ohio Stars and schoolhouse blocks, and yada yada yada...a long list of favorites. Least favorite: double wedding ring. They are always such huge blocks and I like smaller blocks.

  14. My favorite blocks are snowball blocks. You can do so much with this simple block just by adding another one to it.

  15. I recently found your blog while looking up how to make hexagons. I love your style, and your instructions were easy to understand with great pictures. I love the Ohio Star best because it was the first block I learned to make. Thank you for the opportunity to win! texansoverseas@gmail.com

  19. I am a very traditional person, so am partial to the log cabin and nine-patch blocks. Do not like, nor have attempted any blocks with curves in them. I guess I can admit that they intimidate me a little. Your Journey quilts are all lovely; and of course...the fact that they are made with reproductions make them all the nicer! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to win and the Journey 3 previews. Am certainly looking forward to seeing more of them.

  20. Pam, I love the first two quilts. The first one looks a little scarry to me. Applique makes me freeze a little.
My favorite block is the churn dash. And lots of others!!! LOL Karen Schultz

  21. Hi Pam, very glad to be here as a newbie on your blog. How close we come to people without actually meeting! My favorite block is the good old standby nine-patch, first I learned to make, last I will probably sew. I love little quilts and is a good alternative for those of us who can't afford or need to make full sized quilts all the time. My goal for 2012 is to make 12 quilts. The first one is on paper and fabrics have been chosen. I love what you do and may have to join in soon.

  25. My very favorite is anything done by Pam Buda! I have yet to see anything that I have not wanted to start. I am still working on the lst Prairie Women set of quilts but am ever so anxious to collect and start on #3. Hard to pick a favorite pattern -- like pets or children -- love log cabins, 4 patch, 9 patch, stars and anything scrappy or two color. pwiggs@embarqmail.com

  26. Pam, I love the quilts! It's amazing that we are using the quilts from the past and making them using the tools of the future...OK...that was stretching it a little! Suffuce to say, I love the old patterns but love the shortcuts! My favorites are star quilts, log cabin, scrappy quillts ( because I can't just choose a few fabrics...I want them all!) and on and on and on...I don't have any least favorites!

  27. It's hard to choose a favorite block, but it would probably be a pinwheel block, because of the movement in it. I love your combination of 9 patch and pinwheel blocks and can't wait to make this quilt!

  28. Love your new quilts (and all the old ones too!) - so excited to see them. I have 2 all-time favorite blocks - baskets and log cabins. Thanks for the chance to win!

  32. Hi Pam! So excited to see Journey 3! We just finished Journey 2 and have gotten so many positive comments- it really fills a need in our hectic, fast paced lives. My favorite block has to be flying geese- I love the movement and versatility! Least favorite is any block you sweat over for hours and it still isn't right- probably one that involves a 60 degree angle or something:>) Guess what? I'm one of the lucky ones to reserve a spot on your cruise- woohoooo!! Lisa

  34. Contrary Wife, what a beautiful quilt and what an interesting block name. I think it describes my journey through menopause perfectly! My husband would certainly attest to my contrariness these past few years. I'm hoping that when I "arrive" I will look put together again and my inner beauty will shine. Can't wait to get started on this quilt.

  35. Pam
I love the new quilts and that you are giving an option to do larger quilts.
My favorite for applique is the rachel's reel and machine piecing I think the log cabin or courthouse steps.I can't wait for number 3. It looks really awesome and little hexies!!! Keep up the great work.

  36. Pam Just love the new quilts. Giving the option of different block sizes is a great idea.
Two of my favourite blocks are nine patch and Stars. They make great scrappy blocks and stars always shine. Drunkards path is one block I could live without.

  37. Like it that you will be doing two sizes for the quilts. I do like making small quilts, but like making larger ones, too. The two quilts for Journey 3 are winners .... love then! Nine patches and four patches are my favorite blocks. Looking forward to starting Journey 3!

  38. My favorite block is the 9 patch. It is very simple, but there is a lot that you can do with it by changing size, color, or the block it is paired with. I wish there was a shop in my area that hosted the club.

  39. My favorite block is the pinwheel. Whether it is the pinwheel by itself or encased inside of another block. I am very anxious to try the hexagons - loved your tutorial. Now I just need to try it.

  40. My favorite block is the Log Cabin. I have made a couple of scrappy quilts using it and they came out great. But I feel the same about the bubblegum pink and indigo... the contrast is so striking! I'm going to like your blog!

  41. Gosh it has been difficult for me to figure out my favorite block..I read your email yesterday and needed to ponder this overnight. I've decided my favorite is the 9-patch. Why? It's so versatile, the look can be easily altered with various fabrics, textures, size, etc. My least fav is the block (insert whatever here :)where my points don't match!

  45. That's a tough one Pam, my favorite is basket blocks. Second would be log cabins, they can be arranged so many ways. Probably I have made more star blocks than any thing else. Love the idea of two different sizes in series three. My email is sharheir@tds.net.

  46. I'd say my favorite block is Road to Oklahoma. I like to set the blocks together without sashings, which makes a star and a continuous chain. I love Prairie Women's Sewing Circle and I'm looking forward to Journey 3!

  48. I love your quilts and thanks so much for creating the Prairie Women's Sewing Circle. I am looking forward to Journey 3. It is hard to choose my favorite block, right not I am into Dresden Plate and Drunkard's Path blocks.

  50. Hi Pam! I can't wait for Journey 3 either...have loved doing these past quilts in Journey 1 & 2!
My favorite block - is the pinwheel - love that little block since you can make them with the fast method - getting a set of 2 from layered fabric and then the fun way they nest into each other for perfect piecing! Love those! AND they're really fun when you use prairie points to get a 3-D effect! Those are perfect for baby quilts!
Oh Gosh, AND then there is the bow tie made using a modified snowball block with the solid pieces on each of the other sides....
Heck, Nine Patches are pretty fun too! LOL
My LEAST favorite block is ANY block requiring a set in "Y" seam! UGH!
